Genes, Phenes and the Baldwin E ect: Learning and Evolution in a Simulated Population

چکیده

The Baldwin EEect, rst proposed in the late nineteenth century, suggests that the course of evolutionary change can be innuenced by individually learned behavior. The existence of this eeect is still a hotly debated topic. In this paper clear evidence is presented that learning-based plasticity at the phe-notypic level can and does produce directed changes at the genotypic level. This research connrms earlier experimental work done by others, notably Hinton & Nowlan (1987). Further, the amount of plasticity of the learned behavior is shown to be crucial to the size of the Baldwin EEect: either too little or too much and the eeect disappears or is signiicantly reduced. Finally, for learnable traits, the case is made that over many generations it will become easier for the population as a whole to learn these traits (i.e. the phenotypic plasticity of these traits will increase). In this gradual transition from a genetically driven population to one driven by learning, the importance of the Baldwin EEect decreases.

Interactions between Learning and Evolution: The Outstanding Strategy Generated by the Baldwin E ect

The Baldwin e ect is known as interactions between learning and evolution, which suggests that individual lifetime learning can in uence the course of evolution without the Lamarckian mechanism. Our concern is to consider the Baldwin e ect in dynamic environments, especially when there is no explicit optimal solution through generations and it depends only on interactions among agents. We adopt...

Multivalued Evolutionary Algorithms

One feature of evolving populations is that genetic operators act on the genotypic level while selection acts on the phenotypic level. We call the transformation between genes and phenes a developmental process because of its dynamics. Generally, no inferences can be made from phenes to genes, i.e. the mapping from genes to phenes is not an isomorphic one as it is assumed in Genetic Algorithms ...

EFFECTS OF DESMOPRESSIN ON MEMORY DISORDERS DUE TO ELECTROCONVULSIVE THERAPY (ECT) IN HUMANS

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an efficient treatment for several neuropsychiatric disorders however a large number of patients develop memory impairment after ECT. Different studies both on animals and human suggest that vasopressin has positive effects on memory and improves cognitive functions. In this randomized, double-blind controlled clinical trial, 50 patients with psychiatric d...
